Broadband By Satellite
For people who cannot benefit from traditional broadband or from Wimax then broadband by satellite is an option that is available to almost everyone.
All that is required is a clear view broadly to the south (actually just East of South) where the dish can be mounted without without its line of site being blocked by trees, buildings, etc.
Satellite broadband package prices have reduced significantly and are part of the solution to ensure everyone in France has access to a high speed Internet connecton.
How Much Does Satellite Broadband Cost ?
A number of subscriptions are available, depending on the speed of service you require and how much data you will send & receive on line.
Prices start from €19.99 per month for a 256 Kbps connection (about 5 times faster than a dial up connection).
A 1 Mbps connection (about 20 times faster than dial up) is available for €34.90 per month and a 2Mbps connection for €39.90.
The satellite kit required costs €349.00, although there is a 1 Mbps subscription available for €34.90 per month where the kit is provided free of charge on a 24 month contract.
Installation can be completed yourself or by a professional for around €120.00.

What Else Do I need To Know ?
Some of the packages offered have a monthly data transfer limit of 2 gigabytes with unlimited transfer between 11.00 pm and 07.00 am.
If the allowed volume is exceeded then service will be suspended until the allowance is topped up or until the start of the next month when usage is reset.
More expensive packages are available offering unlimited data transfer.
All satellite providers operate a 'fair usage policy' where the connection speed decreases as more data is downloaded. This applies to the unlimited packages as well. If you rely on the Internet for business, to stream video or to regularly download large files then the Fair Usage Policy may make this solution unsuitable for you.
Can I Get Internet Telephone By Satellite?
Yes. For a monthly charge of €19.00 per month you can benefit from a phone service offering unlimited calls to landlines and 27 other countries. For a list of the countries included please click here.
If you do not mind changing your phone number then there is no need to keep your existing landline, meaning you can save the monthly line rental costs !
Free calls are limited to a duration of 2 hours per call. Calls to mobiles and 'special' numbers are charged by the minute.
There is a one-off charge of €29.00 to access the service. The 'Phonybox' required to make calls is provided free of charge.
What Other Services Are Available ?
If you watch UK or French satellite TV a special 'double head' can be provided allowing you to receive both satellite broadband and TV through the one dish.
A wireless router is available as an option to allow you to connect your PC or laptiop by WiFi to the Internet.
